Philip Cox's biography

'Coming Home' tour rehearsal

Philip Cox studied the trumpet at the Birmingham Conservatoire with the Late John Wilbraham and Andy Culshaw, whilst in his postgraduate year he studied with David Mason and Michael Laird at the Royal Academy of Music.
He has enjoyed an unbroken 21 years as a professional trumpeter playing in some of the UK’s finest orchestras, on numerous blockbuster soundtracks, as a session player on a number of 1990’s pop albums and in the pit for Opera, Ballet and ‘West End’ theatre . In the mid to late nineties Philip was part of the Studio Band for the hugely successful talent show ‘Stars in their Eyes’ which is thought to be the catalyst for the globally successful talent search reality shows of today.

In 2001 Philip relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa where he maintains a career as one of the country’s busiest commercial and classical Trumpeters. He has performed in all of the premier musical theatre productions and with the cream of South African and international talent.

Philip has toured with amongst others Katherine Jenkins, Il Divo, Helmut Lotti, Andrea Bocelli, JoshGroban and most recently replaced the scheduled soloist for the world premiere of Paul Hanmer’s Concerto for Piano, Violin and Trumpet as part of the International Mozart Festival.

Philip has two recordings in production, the first of which will be of interest to students and young people who are taking both Trinity and ABRSM examinations and the second of which will be his first solo project (check out ‘Recordings’ for more detail).

Philip Cox is currently Principal Trumpet of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and the South African Ballet Theatre Sinfonia.

Sustainability of music performance in South Africa is important to Philip. The education of future performers who can fulfill the demand for high caliber performers is close to Philip’s heart.

Philip Cox is on the staff of Pridwin Preparatory School, St John’s College and Kingsmead College in Johannesburg.
